LUKAS GRAHAM = New + Danish + Groovy + Funk + Soul

/ Soul, Funk, Denmark.          (Released in Danish, 2012 February 27th)

One of my musical friends (Ravi) has drawn my attention to this new Danish band, called Lukas Graham...

The band consists of:

Lukas Forchhammer - lead singer
Mark "Love Stick" Falgren - drums
Morten "Kirk" Ristorp - keyboards *
"Magnum" - bass

Lukas is of Danish / Irish origin (his father was a folk singer), and was a child actor in the movie Krummerne (he was the kid "Grunk") and also did voice work on cartoons. He grew up in the famous Danish social-experimental, originally hippie-based township of Copenhagen called Christiania.

(More after Ordinary Things, performed in German TV)

Lukas began writing and singing songs and recording demos in New York, and assembled a swinging band. In October 2011 they released their debut single Ordinary Things and it quickly became a big hit on Youtube and radio - it was (by listeners) selected for 2011's best Danish "Powerplay of the Week" on P3 ... and it led to a number of sold-out concerts.

They are now popular and have lots of bookings, and were playing at the P3-Gold awards 2012, at many festivals and more.

More info below their hit video Drunk In The Morning

Gaffa (the best and biggest Scandinavian music magazine) says Lukas Graham will be big in 2012 - Lukas Graham is among the 12 Danish names for 2012 because "Lukas Graham is an excellent singer and songwriter and has a serious Danish soul music band of international class in 2012". They releaseded their debut album Lukas Graham in february 2012.

(Edited: * Lukas Graham's keyboardplayer is now Kasper Daugaard. The band has won several awards, their 1. album was the top-seller and most streamed on Spotify in Denmark in 2012. It has by now sold 4x platinum in DK. They toured Europe and did release the album in other countries, and it vent #1 on German iTunes. In 2013 they signed at contract with Warner Bros Records. In 2015 they released their second album Lukas Graham (Blue Album), by now selling 2x platinum in DK.)

DANS & LÆR - original Danish birdheads ...

/ Bird Calls, Minimalism, Naïvism, Electronica, Denmark          (Posted in Danish, 2011 December 1st)

EDIT: This article features Danish videos, which will be explaned / translated in this article, English videos will be shown further below. They are different songs than the Danish ones, watch 'em all, they are great :-)

There will always be a new and strange thing you haven't yet seen or heard, by which you can be thrilled and fascinated ... that's the cool thing about being curious. As today when I discovered the Danish band Dans & Lær (Dance & Learn)...

Tranlate video 1: Greenfinch. "Flies around having unnaturally stiff wings" they sing. These scientists discusses theories on why that is: 1. The wings are frozen? 2. It suffers from body odour? 3. It plays ball? 4. The greenfinch suffers from high blood pressure? 5. It is a robot? 6. It is in love? Yes, that was the answer. Other info about greenfinches are heard, tells a bit about the song etc.

Dans & Lær is five nerds (in the positive sense) who loves birds and modern music ... Bjarke Søballe Andersen, who as a child had one of the educational tapes with bird calls and narration, gathered the band. The tape was Havens Fugle (Birds of the Garden)  published by The Danish Ornithological Society in 1968, which featured bird calls and informative speaks of Ole Geertz-Hansen.

Their live performance is, as you can see above: energetic and intense. Their rewrite of Daft Punk's superhit Get Lucky with the refrain "She's up all night to get Gulspurv (Yellowhammer)" is just very funny. Check it in the video above from 3:30 where the audience learns that the yellowhammer count one-to-three-four-five-six-seveeeeen as the "bird translation" part of the song (and especially from 4:40), is a must see. ..! Singing "en, en to tre, tre fire fem, fem seks syv" = one, one two three, three four five, five six seven, is the band and crowd celebrating the Yellowhammer-call :-D

The band sampled the tape with the birds calls, and chopped them into hits with a twist of electronica and acoustic instruments - they are such a treat :)

Here's the song Skade (Magpie) from the debut CD Havens Fugle ... They sing "Stemmen høres året rundt" = the voice is heard all year round... and "De hørte allike, nu kommer skade" = you heard Jackdaw, here is Magpie.

Dance and Learn is cult - and nerdy - and interesting. They play on many things, including bread and pill glasses :-)

And now they have made an equally mysterious Advent calendar, a new one each year: Owl Calendar (in Danish Owl Calendar = uglekalender, which rhymes with julekalender = Advent calendar) - follow every day and see what happens - if you are easy to marvel ... (link further down ).

Above was the Greenfinch-song live

The band do it all by themselves: production, recording, cover designs, booking and more. They have made some great albums in Danish - the first ones called Havens Fugle and Flere Fugle (More Birds) and an EP with remixes of Skade (Magpie: - Choice of genres on EP demonstrates consistency and humor, if you understand the danish names and their ambiguity whitch fits the genres chosen in the mixes).

Above another cool live-video, in witch they show some electronica, enthusiasm and the worlds first owl solo, I believe (at 1:35 an forth)

Their newest album is in English, called New Zealand and is based on birds from the other end of the world. When they were about to make a new album, they were aware that (as they write in their press material) they had to exchange the sampled, Danish tape. After several days of searching in old records and some confusion whether to use heart beats, guitar courses or other mysterious things they found the LP A Treasury of New Zealand Birdsong, from 1971. They had to negotiate a little with the surprised rightholders to get permission to sample, but they were allowed and the excellent album New Zealand was a reality.

Dans & Lær sell their music via their website and can also be heard on Spotify.

They write February 14th 2015 on Facebook that they have started making a new album. I can't wait.

Edit: Below is videos from their new album New Zealand, first: Kaka

Next bird is Grey Warbler

Final bird is Skylark

VINDAHL - "new" Danish artist

/ Nu-Disco, Soul, Denmark          (posted in Danish, 2011 November 26th)

I received a tip from one of my musical friends - Susanne H. - and obviously had to check it out ...

This is Ronnie Vindahl who played in both Boom Clap Bachelors and Non+ ... he has released his first solo album with guest singers who does an excellent job: Coco from Quadron and Jenny Wilson.

Below the video Not In Space Without You

Ronnie's solo album (Serendipity) is quite interesting - I was just checking it out on Spotify right now (super invention - you get a good tip and right away you can enjoy the music :)

This music is easy and nostalgic, and yet again new in a way. It is minimalistic at times and a little naive.

Below the video The Question (feat. Jenny Wilson)

This song (above), I have heard more than a few times now... is super fine, but it is as though it has a "twin-song" I've heard before, but WHERE / WHAT? Well, I'll recall someday.
The video looks like it was recorded in Sweden, and Vindahl's father has a home in Sweden, so perhaps that's why ...?

The reviewers are divided, some love it (Gaffa), and some gives bad reviews (Soundvenue) - I think it's pretty good music.

Thanks to Susanne - you people are welcome to send me more tips on music.

Below:  Sometimes

EDITED:
Where is Vindahl now? Why no new albums? It has been almost 4 years since aforementioned album was released. After checking Vindahls facebook page you will find many links on Mø, the successful Danish electronica artist. Search on the two artists combined provides a link to an interesting interview in a quite exciting online urban fashion / music / skater culture magazine, called Bitchslap Magazine ... the article is linked below. Vindahl is now the producer behind Mø (and also collaborate with other artists), he also appeared as her guitarist, but would rather be a producer than a musician. That's why Vindahl haven't released new albums. Do read the interesting article, published in October 2013. Finally, the song: Head over Heels (feat. Coco)

TRENTEMØLLER: Reworked / Remixed

/ Electronica, Denmark          (posted in Danish 2011 Nov. 10th)

Format:                2CD

Tracks:                    25

Playing time:        148 min.

Published:             07/11/2011

Label:                      In My Room

Spotify:                    Yes

Score (max 5):    ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪

Trentemøller has released Reworked / Remixed, on which there is remixes of his own and others' tracks, done by himself and other artists, with an accessible, airy atmosphere through the album.

It is an often dreamy collection of tracks, in which you must listen calm and quiet to enjoy it. Dreamy here does not mean "quiet" as thereare changes in style, tempo and intensity. One could easily imagine it being a soundtrack, because of the drama in the songs.

Here are 3 very nice tracks:

The Mole (Chimes & Bells, Trentemøller remix) is one of the typical Trentemøller-remixes. It is great in its labyrinthine approach. The track starts very quietly, but at 1:21 it turns in a different direction, in the otherwise thoughtful number!

Yes Maam (All Nite Long)  (Visti & Meyland, Trentemøller Remix) is a super cool mix of the very exciting Danish House / DJ duo Visti & Meyland, with the world famous super-DJ Peter Visti. That track is shown just below, but remember to see the equally bold original too, find it in the links further below.

No You Girls  (Franz Ferdinand, Trentemøller remix) is an uptempo mix that provides an Electro-Rock / Dance / complex sensation. SU-PER-COOL. As usual it culminates far into the track ... at 4:40 we hear the first chorus for example ... all good things to those who wait :)

This album is of the type you (if one likes electronica) can enjoy listening to many times with an increasing return. Right now I will download it onto the USB stick for the car radio. (Edit, this was before I got a new car radio that plays directly from Spotify via iPhone:-)
